Disney Resorts: The Ultimate Getaway Destination
In 1971, the Walt Disney Company established the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. This division is responsible for managing and building all of the Disney resorts and theme parks throughout the world. The current chairman is James Rasulo, the former chairman of the Disney Resorts in Paris, France.
Disneyland is the first theme park built by Walt Disney in 1955. It remains a popular destination for Disney resorts enthusiasts. In 1998, the park changed its name to Disneyland Park in order to avoid confusion with the whole Disneyland Resort which houses another theme park as well as lodgings. Disney resorts are usually open most of the time although Disneyland did close all of a sudden after the recent September 11, 2001 attacks in fear of becoming a target. Disneyland also closed after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
Three other Disney resorts are found outside the United States. In 1983, Walt Disney opened its first international park in Japan called Tokyo Disneyland. It is very similar to the first Disney Park in California and is equally successful as well. This is followed by the opening of Euro Disneyland in 1992. Upon failing to meet financial expectations, Euro Disneyland underwent many changes including its name. It is now known as Disneyland Paris. Lastly, the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort is the latest among the Disney Resorts. It opened in 2005 and is run by Disney's Executive Vice President, Bill Ernest.
