Montego Bay Airport: Providing Tourists With Reliable Air Travel

The Montego Bay Airport is one of the biggest airports in the Caribbean. It is known as the Sir Donald Sangster International Airport or simply, Sangster International Airport. Based in Montego Bay, St. James, the airport is named after the former Jamaican Prime Minister, Sir Donald Burns Sangster. The politician is also known for appearing in Jamaica's one hundred dollar bill up to now.

Conceived first in 1936, the Sangster International Airport used to be called the Montego Bay Airport. Construction took several years to complete which finally ended in February 1947. Pan American Airways became the first airline company to operate the airport until the Jamaican government took control in September 1949. Later on, a new terminal is constructed in 1959 to cope up with the growth of the Montego Bay Airport. This included accommodating more passengers and aircraft.

In December 2005, the Sangster International Airport created more space in the facility that enabled the accommodation of larger aircraft. This included the Boeing 747 and the Airbus A340, two of the most commonly used aircraft today. More plans are being implemented to further improve the Montego Bay Airport. An expansion of the runway is one of the main highlights since this increases the flow of airport traffic.
