Castle Clinton National Monument (Battery Park. +1 212 344 7220) Built between 1807 and 1811 to protect the harbor from British attack, the brownstone structure never saw a single shot fired. Roofed over in the 1840s, the castle served over the next century as a concert hall, an immigrant-processing center, then an aquarium. Now restored as the original fort, its small museum has dioramas that depict the buildings various incarnations..
